Protocol

Dictionary of Computer & Internet TermsDictionary of Computer and Internet Terms
When computers communicate, there needs to be some set of guidelines that each computer follows when sending and receiving data. This set of communication rules is called a protocol. There are many different types of computers and operating systems, and just as many different types of connections between them. That's why we need protocols. Though they do help standardize communications, there are still many different protocols -- probably too many to remember. Some examples of these different protocols are PPP, TCP/IP, SLIP, HTTP, and FTP. Can you guess what the last "P" stands for in each acronym? If not, I'll give you a hint: it's the same as "Robocop" with a "p" at the beginning, the "b" changed to a "t", and the "l" changed to a "p". Sorry, I'm wasting space again...
