ROUTER
Computer that acts as an interface between two
networks . A router sends data
packets back and forth between networks.
A communications device designed to transmit signals via the most efficient route possible.
A special-purpose computer (or software package) that handles the connection between 2 or more networks. Routers spend all their time looking at the destination addresses of the packets passing through them and deciding which route to send them on.
A device which forwards traffic between networks. The forwarding decision is based on network layer information and routing tables, often constructed by routing protocols. See also: bridge, gateway, Exterior Gateway Protocol, Interior Gateway Protocol.
A router connects networks together, controlling the routing of packets from source to destination and providing alternate paths when necessary.Typically a router hands off packets to another router along the path until the destination is reached.
