Wide area network
A network that encompasses a large geographical area.
Wide Area Network of computers spanning hundreds or thousands of miles. Unlike intranets and virtual private networks, WANs do not use public Internet arteries and are totally isolated from the public domain.  (See also LAN , Intranet , Extranet , and Virtual Private Networks (VPN) )
A network, usually constructed with serial lines, which covers a large geographic area. See also: Local Area Network, Metropolitan Area Network.
